Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) of Lagos State has gotten the node of the Governor’s Advisory Council on dissolution of local councils in the state and the constitution of a five-man team to run the affairs of the councils in the state until elections are held next year.

The Governor’s Advisory Council, GAC is the APC’s highest decision making organ in the state. The council has Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Governor Fashola, former deputy governor, Abiodun Ogunleye and other party leaders in the state as members.

It was gathered that the meeting approved the governor’s proposal to constitute a five-man committee to be made up of an executive secretary, one deputy executive secretary, who will serve as secretary and three other members.

According to the proposal, directors in the state civil service will be appointed as executive secretaries in 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs) in the state.

A source privy to the development said that the GAC had to accepted Fashola’s template for the five-man committee when the governor explained that his decision was premised on the precedent he found in the state’s records.

“Fashola’s decision was in line with the template, which his predecessor adopted after the expiration of the terms of office of the council chairmen that served between 1998 and 2001. The Tinubu administration set up a five-man committee headed by a director in the state’s public service.

“The GAC agreed to the proposal and consequently convened a meeting, which was held at the State House at Isaac John, Ikeja recently.

“The meeting was convened to ratify the governor’s proposal for the 57 councils. The meeting will also discuss modalities for the party primaries for 2015 elections.” the source said.
