Terrorism has no religion, no border, says Egyptian ambassador
• Seeks global coalition
Against the increasing wave of terrorism across the world, the Egyptian Ambassador to Nigeria, Ashraf Salama, yesterday, said terrorism has no religion nor knows any border, hence, the need for a collective effort to rout it out in whatever form.
Salama, who also called for Nigeria and other African countries’ support in the fight against the ISIS terror group, insisted that a coordinated effort is needed in combating the threat.
Salama, who spoke at a press conference in Abuja, appealed to the African Union (AU) to join his country in the fight against terrorism.
According to him, no nation can afford to shut its eyes to the evil of terrorism in neighbouring countries, saying “terrorism has no religion; terrorism has no border” and that the menace spreads like wild fire.
The ambassador, who noted that the AU coalition against Boko Haram in Nigeria is yielding results, said Egypt would replicate the effort against the ISIS group.
He said the recent airstrikes against ISIS in Libya was to avenge the death of the 21 Egyptians who were beheaded by the terror group.
He said more strikes are planned to target the terrorists’ ammunition and training bases in Libya.
According to him, Egypt thinks that the evil of terrorism cannot be defeated by mere dialogue, but also through force such as the airstrikes recently carried out on ISIS by his country.
“ISIS is threatening the whole region, not only Egypt. We call on the world for support in the fight against terrorism. We are trying to mobilise forces. The African Union coalition against Boko Haram is yielding results and that’s what we are trying to do. ISIS is against Islam. We call for the support of Nigeria and its people to fight terrorism,” the ambassador said.
